The Silver Shore*

After going through this particular post by seanhenricus I was reminded of how beautiful the Nilaveli Beach is. (Great photography there by the way).

Although most of this is out of nostalgia and just homesickness (I'm about to buy plane tickets), I remember this magical place and the heart aches for a different time and place.

Imagine a full moon poya. A silverish huge moon in the sky. The cool breeze and the silent waves hitting the shore every few seconds. The shadow of Pigeon Island just a few seconds away to the left. I stand there. Taking in every smell, every sound. The sand is soft to my bare feet. I look at the foam that forms. I can't help notice the gleam in the water...of the moon light glimmering, dancing away. The foam is white. Silvery. Everything is a shimmery silver.

And I stand there.

Years later, I can't forget the Nilaveli beach. I long to go back.

To stand there again, on a full moon poya day.

To feel that magic again.

    hmmm..... I could also remind it, on 2001 I was been there with my friends...
    Superb trip...
    But nowadays any body can go there..
    no barriers..
    I think we have to encourage the tourism industry in those nice areas...

    A brilliantly poignant post. A bit "God of Small Things" in the description of Nilaweli under a full moon... all the senses are accounted for.

    Makes me want to do a trip right now! New Year's eve is a poya... I have a half a mind to go.

    @ Chavie - thank you. I have to wait a few more months to go back, but it's worth the wait!

    @ Jack Point - I was there in 2001 during that ceasefire period. Never got to go to Jaffna. Next on the list :)

    @ BB - I can't wait to get back! So many things to look forward to!!!

    @ realskullzero - Yup, that's one place you HAVE to go see. It's just a wonderful reminder of how beautiful the world is! The magic of Sri Lanka :)

    @ Kirigalpoththa - Yes! And I can't wait to see your photos if you ever do go there!

    @ Mr. Pissa- I went in 2001 too! I think that's when most of us got to go there for the very first time. I'm sure tourism will really increase in those areas, not just foreigners but even Sri Lankans from the South :)

    @ Sean - Thanks so much, but you give me too much credit. You had pics of Pigeon Island, so would LOVE to see more of Nilaveli beach. It is an amazing place. New Year's is in a couple of days.

You will need: ·    500g of grated juggery (I got lucky, I've found grated juggery from the indian store. WhatsApp isn't a SERVICE & I'm not on FB -- why MY data?

When Facebook added Whatsapp for 19 Million in 2016 to the l ist of social media platforms it already owned, I suppose we all knew what that meant. And so, the day has finally arrived when FB does the usual bullying tactic -- where it begins to aggressively make you agree to the arbitrary data collecting activities it has been doing for a while anyway.  Basically, it's sort of like the mob boss reminding you that it is time to PAY UP. Train Excursions in Sri Lanka

Train travels,  who can resist them? It is the most magical way to travel,  provided you have a lot of time to do it. I won't lie,  I'm pretty crazy about them. I recently took a little trip from Colombo, to Ella - down to Bandarawela (bus) and then to Nuwaraeliya. Having heard about Expo Rail. I was curious about it. As most last minute planning ends up being, well,last minute, observation tickets were out. Expo Rail in a nutshell is a privately owned rail carriage (attached to the normal train - NOT a train by itself) and can easily be booked online. I spent Sri Lankan Rupees 4500/- for two people from Colombo Fort to Ella (One way). It also included breakfast (pastries), Lunch (Sri Lankan rice and the choice of vegetarian - soya rice with carrot and yellow rice, or chicken and the same yellow rice and carrot).
