One of those things you take for granted when you're home. But thousands of miles away from home, it hits you. The smell of siddhalepa reminds of all things Sri Lanka. It soothes the home sick heart and provides temporary relief. You know, kind of like Marmite. Lame, I know.

Memories of Book Fairs past..

Everyone I know back home is visiting the book fair these days and I can't help but reminisce.

Word of advice to the wanderers among those lovely books, the best are found in the bargain, second hand books section. Once I remember me and my friend found this treasure of a book on quotes for only 100 rupees. It turned out to be out of print! Since then I have searched for copies of it online oh so many times...but, nope. Nothing.

Such wonderful memories...every year. The first day after breaking up for the first and very last time, it was among those books and people at the book fair I found refuge. That sense of belonging I feel when surrounded by books everywhere, is hard to explain. It is indeed strange, the familiarity one feels.

It's a 'hang out' place for friends to rummage through piles of books, find a bargain...and sometimes end up buying stuff you don't really need, but still. The IDEA.

The food! Ahh. I love the hot dogs, ice cream and other snacks they have. The drinks. The numerous carnival like things..hehe. Maybe it's because Sri Lanka only has so many places that people can hang out like that...

who knows. But the memories. Oh so many.

Don't miss it, and to my friends, I hope you all have fun! :)

If you can see this, then it works. I'm on the wonderful HTC Evo phone and needless to say am a huuuuuge fan of Android. Yes, its the way to go people. The future is now.

Streaming video and sharing pictures has become a simple click or tap of a button. And yes, I love it. Next phone? I recommend HTC anything really. Previously a loyal Nokia phone fan, HTC seems to be taking over and for good reason. Please feel free to share.

Sunrise in Killinochchi.
Jaffna city moon.

Circumstances (in the form of a broken down vehicle) left me stranded in the middle of no where. To cut a very boring, tiring long story short, I had the wonderful opportunity of taking a bus from Killinochchi to Jaffna town. Yup. How cool is that? I'm sorry I missed the pictures but well, I just didn't dare take the camera out fearing the bumpy ride would kill my camera.

So, no pictures of the bus ride. Just wonderful memories of an awesome bus ride (of a lifetime!).

Yes, I have my reservations about all the people from the south visiting Jaffna and the huge government/military sponsored festivals they had organized there. But in all fairness to myself, I really really just want to, for once be able to be happy about it. Yup, scores of people visiting at the same time is utter chaos, but how else will the people mingle amongst each other? Reconciliation has to start somewhere.

People in Jaffna as well as the 'tourists' all had a good time. The faces I saw had smiles written all over them and although my tamil was not great, we young people managed to communicate. Yes they have problems, so do we.

I came back hopeful. Jaffna was an experience. A place I never thought I would visit in my lifetime. Now I did, and I know I will go back again. Someday.

So I was invited! Finally. I could barely contain my excitement as I clicked the link to sign in, only to find that I'm NOT in a country that supports google voice. sigh. Great.

But anyways, I'm still sharing this with you. The google voice blog says that students are given priority with invites, so if you have an email that ends with .edu go request an invite. You just might get it!

I haven't but I would really really like to.

I read this article after watching a YA tv video interview. Considering the recent news coming out of Sri Lanka, I was quite impressed at the quality of the interview and stuff she said. It was refreshing and inspiring to watch her speak.

I feel quite ignorant for not having read her stuff before. Silly silly me.

So I tried my hand at making malu paang and it worked out, almost.

Apparently 'warm' water does not mean 'hot' water since this kinda kills the yeast.. oops. Oh well, I am learning, that is the point of all this after all.

I need to perfect it and then I shall put up a proper 'recepie' ;)

How to make crepe*

This is really quite easy to make. (Thanks to 'nanga' for introducing me to crepes and sharing this with me. I love it!)

I decided the best things in life are the one's that are shared. So, 'thaaggeng thaagga uthum thaaggai kiyala', I decided to make a post of it it.

Ingredients -

2 eggs

1 cup of flour (piti)

1/2 cup of water

1/2 cup of milk

2 tablespoons of butter melted (it's important that it's liquidified!)

Pinch of salt

Inside the crepe, once it's made -

Banana

Nutella/ Kandos Milk chocolate spread (available at supermarkets, habai tikak ganang i think) or chocolate melted would be fine too

Chocolate syrup

Whip cream (there's an anchor cream in the supermarket and you can blend this, add a bit of vanilla to it)

1 Pan

Bowl to mix everything in

Whisk

Knife to cut banana's

How to make -

Simple! Just mix all the ingredients and put it on a pan on very low heat. Make sure you make it as thin as possible. It's kind of like sri lankan pancakes really :)

Once the crepe is made, put the banana's, whip cream and chocolate melted/ nutella inside and wrap it up like in the pic above. Decorate with chocolate syrup or anything else you have around. I also tried sweetened coconut and brown sugar mix inside, it was exactly like Sri Lankan pancakes.

Try it!! It's so easy and a wonderful dessert/ kind of food, depending on what you decide to put in it. I love how flexible this is :)

Did I mention I love pepper? well, if I haven't already, let me tell you about it. I love it! It's the best thing that ever happened to the human race and food would be oh so wrong if it wasn't for pepper.

What would people do without it? You can have pepper with ANYTHING! Can you say the same about other types of seasoning? Of course not. Pepper is everything! Not to mention the amazing texture and colour it adds to any food. I mean, take the fried egg in the picture for example. Would't it be boringly white and dull otherwise? Look at it now. It looks seasoned.

It looks, right.

Next time you make something, remember that. It doesn't have to be just food you cook. Ever tried pepper with mango (amba), oranges (dodang). pera and (amu) wood apple (yum yum!).

Never underestimate that little bottle of pepper.

I don't know why, but photographing food fascinates me. I think it's because food is never ever the same. I will probably never have this exact same croissant ever again.

This had mushroom, lettuce, tomatoe, pepperoni and fried egg inside with mayonnaise.

I know, not the healthiest type of food.

But hey, there's something about........the shape of a croissant :)

nothing beats kadala. the ads were painful. The shameless gov propaganda was hilarious. The presenters did not even try to be subtle about which side they were on.. But. I have nothing to complain about.

I just hope Sri Lanka has a stronger opposition in the next 6 years. That should give them enough time right? Fingers crossed.

There's a saying "never laugh at someone's dream"

In my dream, I'm at home in the garden

and while I'm dreaming I think,

wait, this isn't real. It's still January, I'm not home yet.

Then it hits me

"wow, my brain has all these images recorded so that it can play it back"

It's really like my own virtual world,

reconstructed by my very own brain, right inside my head"

Then I say to myself "ha! but it has an outdated version of a memory, this plant isn't there anymore. Brain you got it wrong!"

All the time, I'm having conversations with myself inside my head

telling myself it's a dream

and amazed (all the time I'm asleep!) how much the brain remembers

since i cannot reconstruct the landscape if I'm awake

out of sheer memory.

I wonder if I should see a doctor or whether it's because

well, because im just a genius and I don't know it yet

or maybe I'm just ordinary..sigh.

Maybe tonight's dream will tell..

Ever had mallung & jam sandwiches?

I have. My thatha made them.

What's worse? He put marmite with it.

Why? Because I hated butter. Of course, perfect substitute. Marmite.

So I had marmite and strawberry jam. Marmite and mallung. Marmite and everything nangi had with butter in paang, I had with marmite. One horrific time, mallung and JAM (a time when we were out of marmite*). yup. Mallung and jam, i swear.

There were days I would be oh so embarrassed. I would dread the 'interval' when everyone would happily take out their lunch boxes.

The cardinal rule in sharing your lunch with your friends is that it MUST be a give and take thing. So, who wanted to share my lunch? Yup, you guessed it.

I didn't blame the other kids of course.

Countless times, I would go home and complain to amma. But to my thatha? Never.

I couldn't really, when I saw that happy, proud look on his face when he asked if I could tell it was he who made the lunch today. "Yes thathi, it was...er...great." (bright chirpy voice).

Until we were old enough to buy our lunch or take the buth packet to school this saga continued. I've had the most eyebrow raising combination of things inside a sandwich that makes me laugh now, looking back.

Today I saw some left over mallung in the fridge while making breakfast and it made me laugh then to my surprise, I was wiping away tears.

I wonder why it took 10 years for me to realize, but that weird food that no kid would dare to eat? That is what I miss the most. The 'love' that is unique to each one of us, shown in the most outstandingly peculiar ways.

I can't wait to go home again. And I smile as I count the days.

*p.s - Do not attempt at home :P

Avatar...a breath taking experience.

I just came back from watching Avatar in 3D, and I feel like I'm floating around.
The sight of humans does not please me and I long to walk on Pandora
beside those amazing Na'vi people, those glowing plants and creatures

It was the 'balance of life' that really caught me
the monetary value we humans give to things
completely oblivious to the bigger picture
a network of beings,
all things connected.

To me. Avatar was a Matrix, Pocahontas and Star Trek all in one
amazing amazing experience.

James Cameron is just right up there with the Gods right now.
The out of this world concept was so very nicely done.

I strongly recommend you go see it, even if the thought of Aliens does not interest you much. Keep an open mind.

You just might like it, like I did,
and fall asleep, smiling.

about losing a purse..

it's so very personal you know?

one minute you have it, the next minute it's gone. Only a memory.

Then realization starts to set in. Credit card, debit card and what not.

It's quite a panicky moment really.

A sense of relief when you think of the things that you didn't have inside.

And thankful for what was saved.

What's worse is the regret that settles over you, depressing for days on end.

Silent curses at the evil person who took it. Why oh why.

It is cruel, because most of those things are personal.

There's no money inside, never any money.

The little 'book of insults' I was reading, a treasured christmas present,

my dearly beloved's ipod that was a gift to him from his parents on his graduation day

It's the sentimental value that hurts.

Forget the house keys that now requires a costly changing of locks.

It's not the hassle of getting new id's and drivers licenses

or even the uneasy worry of 'identity theft' that is such a big deal here.

It's those little sentimental treasures,

like the 10 unstamped envelopes with personal messages,

all handwritten that took hours to complete.

all stolen, a huge price to pay for a moment of carelessness.

It is cruelty that touches the heart,

irreplaceable, and unimaginable.

After going through this particular post by seanhenricus I was reminded of how beautiful the Nilaveli Beach is. (Great photography there by the way).

Although most of this is out of nostalgia and just homesickness (I'm about to buy plane tickets), I remember the magical place that I will always call 'home,' perhaps a little ironic at this point in time. But significant. To me.

Imagine a full moon poya. A silverish huge moon in the sky. The cool breeze and the silent waves hitting the shore every few seconds. The shadow of Pigeon Island just a few seconds away to the left. I stand there. Taking in every smell, every sound. The sand is soft to my bare feet. I look at the foam that forms. I can't help notice the gleam in the water...of the moon light glimmering, dancing away. The foam is white. Silvery.

And I stand there. Years later, I can't forget the Nilaveli beach. I long to go back.

To stand there again, on a full moon poya day.

To feel that magic again.
